Good You, Good Fruit!

Writer: Audra OakesAudra Oakes

I have written before about original design and purpose. This is a topic close to my heart because I strongly believe that identity is a fundamental and core motivator of what we do, how we perceive the world and ultimately what we accomplish and leave behind. If you ask almost anyone with empathy of the contributions they wish to make to the world around them, especially towards their family and loved ones, the reply will demonstrate a desire to do good. Overwhelmingly, we want to do good to others however we miss a foundational truth about how we can give, do or be good. We miss that our identity and specifically our perception of ourselves drives what we can do and accomplish.

A lack of, or a false identity can cause us to become ineffective or cause us to continuously produce the wrong thoughts and actions. This is critical to understand because what we do and achieve in the long run is birthed from our perceived identities. Jesus said “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.” (Matthew‬ ‭12‬:‭35‬ ‭NKJV‬‬). Who is good man except a man who knows that he is loved by God, redeemed, anointed and appointed to good works? “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians‬ ‭2‬:‭10‬ ‭NKJV‬‬).

Our actions are a fruit of our identities. When we become born again, we become a new creation. (II Corinthians 5:17). Our new identity as children of God and joint heirs of salvation imbues us with power through the Holy Spirit to act according to God’s will. (Romans 8:17; Philippians 2:13). So our identity matters significantly as it holds our purpose and the power to manifest what God has planned for us to do in this world. Good things!

If you do not know who you are, ask the maker. If you think you know who you are, still ask Jesus! Ask Jesus to come into your heart and to reveal who you are to Him and who He is to you. Jesus is the true light. (John 1) His perspective is what we all need. When Jesus reveals who you are in Him, what you are supposed to be and do will follow as well as the peace, presence and power to accomplish it. It may happen right away or like it has for me, it may be a long process as he removes the darkness and lies, revealing gently the shiny new you. It is worth the journey whether quick and easy, or long and arduous because you get to know and spend time with Jesus. You get to experience Him love on you and there is nothing better. In John chapter 15, Jesus explained this process with an analogy. Jesus is the true vine. Abide in Him and become the true you. It is the nature of the true you to bear good fruit.
