The Good Shepard: Reflection on Psalm 23

Writer: Audra OakesAudra Oakes

To the wise. Take the Lord’s words of encouragement and comfort to heart today. The Lord says to you today, “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10. The Lord instructs us to “let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in me” (John 14:1). This is the posture of faith that pleases God! Our rest in Christ’s finished work is principal to overcoming in this life through the Spirit of God and bearing fruit as people of the Lord. Resting in the Lord is the most important thing you can do after receiving salvation because in His rest you are restored, renewed and equipped for every good work the Lord has purposed you to accomplish!

The time I spend with the Lord is always the best time. I come away brimming with information, encouragement, love, insight and so many more blessing I can barely contain, journal, or remember them! On one such occasions I wrote some notes based on Psalm 23, a famous psalm of David. In psalm 23 we are assured first that we do not belong to ourselves but have a “shepherd” who keeps us lovingly.

The following are my interpretations of Psalm 23. Pray to the Lord in Jesus name for wisdom, interpretation, knowledge and revelation before you read and scripture. This always enables you to engage with the Lord. This is crucial as the Bible is not a book written from the heart and mind of man but by the power and Spirit of almighty God! Meditate on the words and their meaning and journal as directed by the Lord. I pray for insight, revelation, and peace for you as you take these words in and discover how they may enrich your life in every area. To the Christian, note here that “The Lord” is the covenant title that the Jews referred to God as in the story of Prophet Elijah on Mount Carmel. As new covenant believers, the name we call on is Jesus. When we refer to “The Lord” we are demonstrating that we come to God (YHVH) through the covenant made by Jesus’ blood and finished work on the cross. Here goes.

1.  “The Lord is my Shepard; I shall not want.” (You are not your own. You belong to Jesus. He is your provider, protector, keeper, healer, and comforter. The Earth is His. He will lead you to rich pasture.)

2.  “He makes me to lie down in green pastures.” (He makes you abide in peace. His peace is not dependent on your circumstances. The Lord gives you rest in a place of His provision, peace, and comfort regardless of what is going on in the world around you.)

3.  “He restores my soul; He leads me in the path of righteousness for His name’s sake.” (The parts of you that are broken that neither medical science, psychiatry or others can reach or fix, He restores. The Lord saves your mind, heart, spirit, and soul from corruption. He cleanses your conscience, fortifies your mind, and gives your soul peace. He reconnects you to the flow of His spirit and His thoughts where you can hear His counsel again. His counsel corrects my path.)

4.  “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” (He is always with you. Jesus never leaves or forsakes you though you may face trials, hardships, and temptations. The Lord NEVER leaves us. The Lord will not forsake or abandon you. He promised to never leave you, and His word is true. His protection will remain. Because God is with you, you can choose not to fear. When the Lord corrects you, take comfort in knowing it is because you are His child.)

5.  “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil. My cup runs over.” ( Before you arrive, the Lord has already made provisions for you. You belong in that place of provision. It is yours! The Lord provides abundantly good provisions for you so that all can see that He loves and cares for you. He does this unashamedly, demolishing the enemy’s plans against you and even your own doubt. As you feed on His word, The Lord prepares you to overcome and take possession of your inheritance in Him! He anoints you for the service He predestined you for. The Lord’s anointing empowers you to take possession of your possessions.)

6.  “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” (The Lord’s love and abundant goodness in every area of your life are with you every day. You are also blessed to be a blessing to others as He enables you to minister to others what you have received from Him. Grace. The Lord’s dwelling place is your home. You are a member of His household and family. The Lord does not lose what is His. He is able to keep you. “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10.)

I encourage you to meditate on these words until they are planted deep in your soul. Take heart child of God. God is for you. Abundant blessings are yours in Jesus’ name who died and paid the price in full to make it so.
